IronStorm – interview

Today, we have spoken with the members of 4X Studios about their latest game in development - first-person shooter IronStorm. Main attraction of this game will be an Alternate History and the game`s world itself. What new features will Iron Storm offer, why will it be or won`t be successful, what is the supposed release date - this isn´t everything at all you can learn from our interview!

Doupe: Could you please introduce yourself?
Edouard Lussan -  Wanadoo Editorial Director who designed the concept of the game and follows the production.

Roman Vincent - 4X Studio CEO, who runs the IronStorm development.

Doupe: Your development team 4X Studios is actually working on a new shotter called Iron Storm. How many people work on this game? And also, how long have you been working on it already?
Roman Vincent: We have been started in January 2001. And 16 people are working on the game.

Doupe: Could you please tell us something more about this game?
Edouard Lussan: The Universe and the gameplay are very linked to make a game that impresses the players. If only one of them is missed, the game is poor. The realistic point of view on the war, the graphical and sound effects will probably impress the player as well... For instance, we have dozens of different sounds for the bullet impacts in the different materials (wood, flesh, iron, mud...).

 

 

Doupe: What is the background story?
Edouard Lussan: The first basis of IronStorm are very simple to get: the First World War burst out, as everybody knows, in 1914. We are in 1964 and the war is not over yet and lasts since 50 years. Immediately the public can understand that the world we are proposing them is a kind of mix between the First, the Second World War or a kind of Vietnam War in Europe. As modern weapons, devices and materials can allow a very accurate game play, you will never find any aliens, lizards, monsters or shuttle in IronStorm. Realism of war was our main concern.

Doupe: Where does your game take place?
Edouard Lussan: The player undertakes an infiltration mission and must possess combat skills as well as stealth if he is to survive as he penetrates behind enemy lines. The player must pass through 6 worlds in a Germany ripped apart by the front line: the Friedrich line (the Western front), the Anton Denikin line (the Russo-Mongol front), Wolfenburg (an enemy-occupied town), the Mad Baron`s heavy water factory, the "Tzar Ivan" armoured train and the Reichstag in Berlin. Each world is composed of different levels (outdoor and indoor).

Doupe: Iron Storm will combine real elements from the 1st and 2nd World War. Could you tell us something further about these elements?
Edouard Lussan: For example, the player`s weapons consist of a Russian short sabre, a Heckler & Koch MP-6 "Wotan" assault pistol with a silencer fitted, a Remington M910 "Bull`s Eye" shotgun, a M203 40mm "Clovis" grenade launcher, fragmentation and smoke grenades, and antipersonnel and magnetic mines.

 

 

Roman Vincent: Furthermore we will add to these weapons different storm and snipe shotguns whose design and power were based on real weapons but which will be extrapolated (a blend of the characteristics of weapons of the forties and ones of futurist weapons that do not exist yet.)

Doupe: What new features will Iron Storm offer, especially compared with other shooters and action games?
Roman Vincent: Permanent choice possible between first person and third person throughout the entire game and at the player will.

Besides, the proposed universe is also an important element of differentiation. I`ve never seen a shooter which uses Alternate History. Alternate History means that you start from the real and true history, but suddenly you change and invent a new history stream, based on realistic and plausible facts. It will be up to the player to understand what happened since 1914 and why the war is lasting so long, who is now fighting against who, why, what are their objectives, etc...

Doupe: What about multiplayer? Will it be in the game?
Roman Vincent: IronStorm will have a Deathmatch mode playable up to 16 players. We are actually working on a mission disk (IS2) pushing forwards multiplayer feature based on:

  • maps designed for Multiplayer up to 32 for deathmatch, catch the flag and cooperative modes
  • maps including strong IA so that players could feel the maps are "living places"

Doupe: At this time many development teams are working on action games, especially shooters. Why do you think that Iron Storm will be succesfull?
Edouard Lussan: The proposed universe. I`ve never seen a shooter which uses Alternate History. It will be up to the player to understand what happened since 1914 and why the war is lasting so long, who is now fighting against who, why, what are their objectives, etc...

Doupe: Do you plan to release any game editor with the full version of your game?
Edouard Lussan: No

 

 

Doupe: What is the current status of your game´s development? And do you plan to release any playable demo?
Edouard Lussan: We are now testing the game in house and a playable demo will be out soon.

Doupe: What is the supposed release date?
Edouard Lussan: October, 23rd 2002

Doupe: Does your development team has any plans for further games besides the upcoming Iron Storm?
Roman Vincent: Of course we have. We are actually working on two new games, an action/RPG game on PS2 and NGC called "Times of trouble" and a new shooter based on 1942 Stalingrad`s battle. We have a third project we are working on but it`s too early to speak more about it.
